Good Food Brampton Community Kitchen was established by Catholic Family Services Peel Dufferin (CFSPD) in 2013. Located in the Hon. William G. David Centre for Families in Brampton, Catholic Family Services (est. 1981) has provided professional and affordable counselling services to all people who come to the agency seeking help, with a specialized focus on families impacted by domestic violence. CFSPD’s staff and client base is as diverse as the Region it serves. With capacity in 12 languages onsite, the agency reaches out to newcomers, immigrants, the poor and marginalized, and people of all faiths and creeds. According to its 2012-2013 Annual Report, 53% of CFSPD’s clients are non-Catholic, 55% claim an ethnicity other than Canadian, and 53% earn a family income of $30,000 or less in a region where the family average is $87,765. CFSPD serves more than 29,000 people each year of all ages including children, youth and seniors.
Catholic Family Services brought together a number of local organizations to develop Good Food Brampton Community Kitchen. Its purpose is to enhance the access to nutritious and affordable food for at-risk and homeless population in Brampton and develop community partnerships to minimize the growing concern of food insecurity in Peel Region. By locating the Community Kitchen within the Hon. William G. Davis Centre for Families, program participants will have greater access to a holistic continuum of services that can provide them with the additional support they need to strengthen themselves and their families and to make their way out of poverty.
